In health science weight has been classified into five categories based on a particular calculation to let people know whether they have normal or unhealthy weight, it is called the BMI (Body Mass Index). It is calculated by dividing weight in kilograms by the square of height in meters. The categories are as follows;
<18.5 represent underweight
18.5 – 24.9 normal weight
25 – 29.9 overweight
40 morbidly obese
Studies have shown that the BMI value usually gives you an estimate of your total body fat as a percentage. For example, if we have BMI that equals to 22 our fat will be close to 22% of our total weight. A healthy percentage of body fat should be between 19% – 25% depending on age and sex (women having more fat than men).
Being obese is a major factor in many serious health conditions; it increases the risks of cardiovascular diseases, diabetes and high blood pressure. In some cancer studies it showed that having saturated fat can be an indicator for certain tumor appearances. We should mention the challenges obese people face in their efforts to lose weight either by diet or exercise.
It is no coincidence that in gyms we don’t see many obese and overweight people exercising. Is it because they do not want to be there; certainly not, the reasons behind that may be social, psychological or due to mental gaps. However, lack of education is mainly what prevents obese people from starting or continuing their exercise. This results in adopting a passive attitude in life which makes them put on more weight.
Some issues that obese people face in gyms are the equipment’s ability to bear their weight. The fitness benches are narrow and small, trainers usually hand them a list of exercises and leave them without supervision and guidance. Most of professionals do not consider the low ability of an obese in performing. Regardless of the volume, an obese individual cannot perform any exercise very well. They mostly don’t have the strength and the flexibility to handle all the weight they carry. Therefore, their programs must be carefully made.
Obese people need lots of psychological support and encouragement all the way through their journey to reach their goals. In conclusion I say all that I’ve mentioned should be the exclusive work of health and fitness consultants or what is known as a Health coach.
Despite the latest guidance in healthy life style and physical activity, results show that physical activity has been understood and adopted by majority but still obesity is increasing. The question remains, why obesity is still increasing? The answer to that is FOOD. Today’s diet is the main cause for obesity along with low physical activity. Therefore, to reach the desired results, an obese individual should follow an exercise and diet program strictly under the guidance of a health coach. Health advice should be catered to each individual for their specific needs according to gender, age and the health situation.
